2.1 Recent trends in engine monitoring systems
(a) As more modern vessels are being built and more equipment on-board vessels become automated, engine monitoring systems are undergoing more and more improvements. On the other hand, there are increasing number of engine monitors offered that have only the minimum necessary functions. These facts suggest that the trend in engine monitoring system is splitting into two groups: that is the improved and basic models.
(b) Monitoring techniques. In general, CRT displays are the most frequently used device for engine monitoring system on board vessels. These days, it is often the case that a separate CRT display is set up outside the control roomtrough an extension cable. Two typical situations are: a control room outside the engine room (i.e. upper deck), so that an extension CRT display needs to be installed in the workshop in the engine room; and an extension CRT display placed in the Chief Engineer's room so that the engine can be monitored at all times. For easy viewing, larger-screen CRT displays are preferred. On the other hand, as prices have dropped in recent years, color LCD displays are becoming more widely used in various applications. Throughout the industry, the trend is towards replacing CRT displays with lighter-weight, and more compact LCD displays as the primary and extension terminal display units.
(c) System configurations. In general, engine monitoring systems are incorporate a complete dual back-up system (hot standby), to cope with the problems associated with equipment failure. This trend is expected to continue in the indefinite future. On the other hand, greatly expanded self-diagnostic and troubleshooting functions are required for ships' engine monitoring to facilitate the repair work where ships' crew faces in the event of an equipment failure caused by problems with electrical or electronic components.
(d) Request From Our Customer Relating to Engine Monitoring System.
・ Lower cost
・ Quicker delivery
・ Flexible customization that will allow the user to have the software program customised to suit his needs.
・ Lesser cables required - to shorten the shipbuilding and outfitting times.
・ Increased ability to handle more monitoring points due to the increasing use of automated equipment on board vessels.
・ More flexible functions to meet the broad range of customer needs.
